The Morristown-based non-profit provides free preschool for students who cannot afford to pay for a high quality preschool. Their goals are to serve families in the local communities, while raising awareness and funds for the students tuition, said a statement. Preschool Advantage was established in 1995 to fund quality preschool for 3 and 4 year-old children of families in need. For the 2016-2017 school year, the program will send 70 children to 17 partner preschools in Morris and Somerset counties. The Preschool Advantage website said the annual Household Survival Budget for the average New Jersey family of four, is $67,871. The survival budget is a guide created by Rutgers University and the United Way, to estimate the minimal cost of basic household necessities. While Morris County is considered one of the most affluent counties in the state and indeed in the country, nearly 28 percent of households struggle to meet basic living costs, said the website. The high cost of living has created a population of people who make too much to qualify for government financial support but too little interview skills training for job seekers to cover day to day expenses, much less early education. These gap families are the core of the population we serve. Other families served by Preschool Advantage include those who earn a higher income but are battling crises that drain their financial resources such as family medical issues or personal disasters.
